Top 10 Must-Try Traditional Dutch Dishes in Amsterdam (2025)

Discover the Best Food in Amsterdam

Let’s be real: When you think of Amsterdam, food probably isn’t the first thing that pops into your head, right?

I get it – before my own trip, I didn’t know much about the local food scene either.

But that’s the beauty of travel, isn’t it? Getting to dive into a city’s history, culture, and of course – its food. It’s an experience you can’t get anywhere else.

And let me tell you, Amsterdam’s food scene surprised me in the best way. I did my homework (a lot of it), scouring Yelp, blogs, and Google reviews for the best local eats.

But you know what really made my experience authentic?

The locals.

After we checked into our Airbnb, Carl and Jeroen, our amazing hosts, gave us a list of hidden gems to try.

We followed their advice and stumbled upon some amazing food spots that didn’t show up in any of my research. Plus, a few drinks at a local bar opened the door to even more recommendations.

So, I’m here to save you time and share the must-try dishes in Amsterdam that’ll make you feel like a true local.

Ready to eat your way through Amsterdam?

Let’s dive in!

So if you’re ready to eat like a local In Amsterdam, let’s get to it!

1. Appletaart (Dutch Apple Pie)

If you’re gonna start your Amsterdam food adventure with anything, it’s gotta be the appletaart. Think of it as the love child of a cake and a pie – buttery, decadent, and absolutely irresistible. If you’re looking for the best apple pie in Amsterdam, Café Winkel 43 is where you want to go. Located near the Anne Frank House, this spot is perfect for a sweet treat after soaking in the history.

2. Dutch Cheese

Okay, I’m gonna say it – Dutch cheese is next level. If you’re a cheese lover (and who isn’t?), you absolutely have to try some of the world’s best cheeses here. Head over to Reypenaer Cheese for a tasting session – it’s just a short walk from the Anne Frank House, so you can work off the pie you had earlier. Trust me, you’ll want to savor every bite.

3. Stroopwafel

You haven’t really lived until you’ve had a fresh, warm stroopwafel. This crispy wafer filled with gooey caramel is an absolute Amsterdam must. The best ones come from a stand at the Albert Cuyp Market, a bustling spot where locals and tourists alike line up for the sweet treat.

Pro tip: Get it fresh, and try not to devour it in 3 seconds (though I can’t promise you won’t).

4. Vlaamse Frites (Dutch Fries)

Yes, I know, fries are technically Belgian, but trust me, you’ll find some of the crispiest, most flavorful fries in Amsterdam. What makes them even better? The mayo. I know, I know, mayo’s not everyone’s thing, but Dutch mayo is on a whole new level. If you’re not into mayo, there are other sauce options, but these fries – especially from places like Frietboutique – will blow your mind.

5. Bitterballen

If you’re ready to snack like a local, you’ve got to try bitterballen. Imagine a crispy, golden ball stuffed with beef ragout – it’s fried comfort food at its finest. It’s a staple at bars all over Amsterdam, but I highly recommend stopping by The Pantry to get your fix. They’re the experts.

6. Raw Herring (Haring)

I know, I know – raw fish? But hear me out. Haring (raw herring) is a Dutch delicacy that you can’t skip if you’re in Amsterdam. You’ll see locals munching on it at street stands, usually topped with onions and pickles. I’ll be honest, at first glance, it’s a little off-putting, but once you taste it, you’ll get why it’s a local favorite.

7. Poffertjes (Mini Pancakes)

Mini pancakes – could it get any better? Poffertjes are fluffy, sweet, bite-sized pancakes, often served with powdered sugar and butter. They’re a fun treat to snack on while wandering through the city. You’ll find food stands all over Amsterdam serving up these little bites of joy. Plus, they’re a crowd-pleaser for both kids and adults!

8. Dutch Burger

Now, burgers aren’t exactly a Dutch invention, but the Burger Bar in Amsterdam claims to serve one of the best burgers in Europe. After sinking my teeth into one, I’ve gotta say – they might just be right. Juicy, flavorful, and everything you want in a burger. Worth a stop if you’re craving something familiar but elevated.

9. Drop (Dutch Licorice)

Alright, I’ll admit – black licorice isn’t everyone’s jam. But the Dutch absolutely love it. And honestly, you’ll find so many varieties of drop (Dutch licorice) that even if you’re not a fan, you might discover a flavor that works for you. Fun fact: The Netherlands is the largest producer of licorice in the EU, so if you’re feeling adventurous, give it a try!

10. Rijstaffel (Indonesian Rice Table)

The influence of Dutch colonialism is still evident in Amsterdam’s food scene, and rijstaffel is a perfect example. It’s an Indonesian “rice table,” featuring small, flavorful dishes that pair perfectly with rice. If you’re in the mood for something different, head to Max Amsterdam for an unforgettable rijstaffel experience. Your taste buds will thank you.
